During Asian Heritage Month, the Learning Commons & Library will be hosting the "Sacred Asia: Exploring Spirituality" exhibit for a limited time:

Sacred Asia Exploring Spirituality for Asian Heritage Month Exhibit: April 28 - May 12 at the Library's front entrance Sacred Asia Exploring Spirituality for Asian Heritage Month Exhibit Description
Sacred Asia: Exploring Spirituality
Presented by Dr. Kevin Tangonan, Office Of Planning, Policy & Assessment
Exhibit Dates: April 28 - May 12
Location: Library Entrance

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, "Sacred Asia: Exploring Spirituality" invites you to journey though the spiritual and cultural landscapes of Asia. This exhibit showcases a curated collection of sacred and symbolic items.

Each piece reflects the rich tapestry of beliefs, customs, and historical narratives that shape the spiritual identities of diverse Asian cultures, from religious artifacts and good luck charms to ceremonial objects and ancestral symbols, these items embody the deep connection between the material and the metaphysical.

This exhibit serves as a space to explore how tradition and spirituality are interwoven into daily life, artistic expression, and cultural continuity across generations. Through these artifacts, we celebrate the resilience, diversity, and sacred traditions that continue to guide communities throughout Asia and the Asian diaspora.

It's International Education Week (IEW)! To celebrate IEW, the library staff teamed up with the Office of International Programs to create a display about loʻi kalo:

Banned Books Week 2024: LGBTQIA spotlight and Banned Book Bar Graph activity

According to the American Library Association (ALA), between January 1 - August 31, 2024:

  • there were 414 attempts to censor library materials and services

To celebrate the right to read, we will pass out "Banning Books is Bananas!" stickers to anyone participating in our Banned Books Week bar graph activity, September 23-27!

April 23-29: Right to Read Display

Celebrate National Library Week with Leeward CC Library!

This year, National Library Week kicks off with Right to Read Day on Monday, April 24th. Libraries across the country saw record numbers of book challenges in 2022; most of these attempts to ban books occurred at school or public libraries. Librarians believe in an individual’s right to choose what they read, and we invite you to learn why the freedom to read is important from our American Library Association (ALA) President, Lessa Kanani‘opua Pelayo-Lozada.

Fun trivia: Lessa Kanani‘opua Pelayo-Lozada is the first ALA president of Hawaiian ancestry, and Leeward Library hosted her in November 2022 for the Hawai‘i Library Conference.

We also encourage you to see There’s More to the Story at Leeward Library. In addition to books, you can borrow laptops, iPads, and charging devices. You can also talk with a librarian to get help with research, finding resources, or citing sources.

RFID'ing in the Library: UPDATE

" "

28,802 books have been RFID tagged as of Monday, February 27th. Our project is a little over 60% completed!

The library is implementing a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) theft detection system for materials. In September, library staff and librarians began the conversion process, which involves pulling books off the shelves and affixing RFID tags to each book. Each RFID tag is encoded with a book’s barcode number, format type, and the library’s unique OCLC code. Tagged books are then returned to the shelf. With over 46,000 individual books in our collection, we estimate that the conversion process will be completed in the late spring or summer of 2023. For more information about this project, please read our RFID Conversion Project blog post.

The perseverance and talent that Maya Angelou, Octavia Butler, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and many other Black women authors had helped pave the way for current authors to breathe life into their books' characters, such as "The girl with the louding voice," by Abi Dare, and "White teeth : a novel," by Zadi Smith. As Toni Morison said so wonderfully, "If you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else."
